Holes in the Fabric of Space and Time
Sharpie and Canvas, 2022
I have never considered myself a visually artistic person. I can't draw, paint, or create in a way that I view as traditionally artistic. However, I do make art, just in my own way. Whether it be spreadsheets, mazes, combinations therein (or thereout), I like making things. A large part of the personal sections of this site are here as a way for me to validate to myself that what I am doing counts, and I have found that speaking things into the world makes them a little more true each time you say them. So I am an artist, and here is some of my art!

There is something about repetetive action that soothes the soul. Repeating the same action over and over for hours or even days at a time, with just enough slight variation to keep the spirits alite. Or maybe it's just the ADHD. Regardless, here's some spreadsheet art.

Back in the fall of 2022 I was thinking of new art projects I might be interested in. I like the idea of taking some pixel art and transforming into something physical, possibly with quilting or crocheting (skills I do not have). What resulted was me spending several hours (re)creating pokémon sprites, pixel by pixel, in a Google sheet. I limited myself to only the sixty or so default colors in Google sheets in the aim to keep the colors limited to those I could possibly acquire in real life. As it turns out there are almost 3,000 unique colors used in the Gen III pokémon sprites, so this was a little ambitious of me (A breakdown of every color used in each sprite, as well as a compiled list of all colors used can be found here).
In Spring 2024 I returned to this project, and spent maybe thirty minutes writing a python program that can convert the sprites instantly, but I still like these original six that I made cell by cell.
