I'm Sam Macdonald, an assistant professor of mathematics at Augustana University. Before coming to Augie I had a brief summer stint at Scientific American as a AAAS Mass Media ellow, and before that I was an NSF Graduate Research Fellow at the University of Nebraska—Lincoln, where I was advised by Yvonne Lai.
My research lies scattered across the wide landscape of mathematics education, from innovative grading practices to teaching mathematics in prisons. I'm generally interested in the intersectons between mathematics and other disciplines, primarily in the humanities and social sciences. Such intersections include (but are by no means limited to) speculative fiction, gerrymandering, fascism, history, and wider scientific communication.
Outside of academia, I write speclulative fiction and humor under the pen name Sam E. Sutin. When I'm not writing, you can probably find me climbing, reading, or attempting to set and solve Variant Sudoku puzzles.
